A Treatise of Torah Novellae by the Great Rabbi Yosef Rosen, the ‘Rogatchover’ – Sharp Criticism Against Those Stealing His Novellae!
A manuscript containing the responsa of the great Rabbi Yosef Rosen, the ‘Rogatchover’ zt"l, with sharp words against those who have stolen his Torah innovations and other matters of study.
“I received your letter today, and most of the writers mentioned there, both those who are alive and those who have passed away, are all claiming and wrapping themselves in a tallit that is not theirs, having taken all of my works… And there are those who write in my name, but what do I care for this…, ".He also mentions an author who copied his novellae and has now gone to the Holy Land, which he refers to as a "city of refuge, " adding, "What can I do…?”
The famous gaon Rabbi Yosef ben Ephraim Fishel Rosen, the ‘Rogatchover’ (1858–1936), was one of the greatest geniuses of all times, known for his extraordinary intellect and unparalleled erudition. Born in 1858 in Rogatchov, he was the son of Rabbi Ephraim Fishel, a follower of the Lubavitch Hasidic dynasty. As a child, he was blessed with great intellectual prowess by the Tzemach Tzedek, the third Rebbe of Lubavitch.
A foremost disciple of the great Lithuanian scholars, the ‘Beit Halevi’ Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik of Brisk, and Rabbi Chaim Brisker, as well as Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin zt"l. His father sent him to study under Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, then in Slutsk, where he also studied with Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik. He later studied under Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin in Shklov.
In 1889, he was appointed as the rabbi of the Hasidic community in Dvinsk by Rebbi Shlomo Zalman of Kapust, alongside Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk, author of the ‘Or Sameach, ‘ who served as the rabbi of the Lithuanian community.
Known as a genius among geniuses, one of the few in his generation with an encyclopedic knowledge of the entire Torah, both its principles and details. His approach to Torah study was unique, treating the entire Torah as a single, unified concept, demonstrating how everything is interconnected. He answered thousands of questions posed to him and was famous for his incredible diligence in Torah study.
His works include the "Tzafnat Paneach, " a collection of responsa and commentary on the Torah, which are filled with numerous cross-references to the entire Torah. A dedicated institute has been established to decipher his works, with his commentaries on the Rambam being especially well-known.
