Complete set of the Talmud Bavli with commentaries, printed by the grandsons of the Holy Rabbi of Slavuta, Rabbi Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira, Zhitomir, 1858–1867.
This 21-volume set includes all tractates.
Some tractates feature the commentary Meir Nativ by the great Rabbi Shabtai HaKohen (Shach), which was omitted in the Vilna edition and highly praised by the Chazon Ish Zt”l.
The set comes from the estate of the great Rabbi Moshe Gedalya Markovitz Zt”l (born 1909), a disciple of the Imrei Emes of Gur, who ascended with him to the Holy Land. He regularly studied from this set and even recorded his glosses (in Tractate Bava Kama). According to his children, he saved every penny to rebind each volume one by one, and when he brought the newly bound volume home, he would dance with his children with joy for the mitzvah and his love of Torah.
The original bindings of these ancient volumes wore down over time, and due to their importance, after his passing, the volumes were entrusted to a God-fearing bookbinder from Bnei Brak, who rebound them with luxurious covers.
Great Chassidic leaders were meticulous in using the sacred Shas sets from the Slavuta and Zhitomir printings, as they were printed by the holy sons and grandsons of the Holy Rabbi from Karitz, with purity, by God-fearing Jews, and without involvement from secular or non-Jewish printers.
