"…And the Merit of the Torah Will Protect Him…" – Letter from the Author of "Aruch HaShulchan" – Navahrudak, 2nd of Tammuz, 1904.
A holy letter from the renowned Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein, zt"l, author of "Aruch HaShulchan" and Av Beit Din of Navahrudak, addressed to Rabbi Menachem Mendel, Av Beit Din of Kazan.
The letter is filled with words of gratitude and blessing for Rabbi Menachem Mendel’s support of Torah scholars, concluding with heartfelt blessings: "…and the merit of the holy Torah will protect him and all that is his… blesses him with all the good…"
The illustrious Rabbi Yechiel Michel Epstein (1829–1908), one of the greatest halachic authorities before World War I, was the brother-in-law of Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin (the Netziv) and later the esteemed rabbi of the city of Navahrudak.
Rabbi Epstein’s works, "Aruch HaShulchan, " were widely embraced by the Jewish community, covering nearly all areas of halacha. He also authored "Aruch HaShulchan HeAtid, " which deals with future laws to be observed in the Messianic era. His seforim are foundational texts for halachic rulings even today and are recognized for their combination of profound halachic analysis and moral teachings based on Kabbalistic insights.
The letter appears to be mostly written by a scribe, except for the signature and the name of the recipient, which are in Rabbi Epstein’s own handwriting and with his personal stamp.
