Kamenitz,   [1930..]

The holy Gaon Rabbi Baruch Ber Leibowitz (1864-1940), author of "Birkat Shmuel, " was one of the greatest Torah educators of his generation. He was a disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim of Brisk at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He was the son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Zimmerman, Av Beit Din of Halusk and Kremenchug. After his father-in-law moved to Kremenchug, Rabbi Baruch Ber succeeded him in the rabbinate of Halusk and established a yeshiva there. After 13 years, he was invited to serve as the Rosh Yeshiva of "Knesset Beit Yitzchak" in Slabodka. During World War I, he wandered with his yeshiva to Minsk, Kremenchug, and Vilna, until he finally established it in Kamenitz. His work "Birkat Shmuel" on Talmudic topics is a foundational text for the study method practiced in Lithuanian yeshivas.
